Our history starts from some sociological and demographic considerations

San Donato - San Vitale district, where the after-school service operates, is populated by many families of foreign origin with modest economic conditions and a low level of education. The children and young people of these families face school with many difficulties and with almost no support from their parents, risking the abandonment of the educational path.

Considering the gravity of this situation, in 2006 we decided to accept the San Vincenzo de Paoli Association's invitation to participate in the National Campaign: "Help me study - It benefits everyone".

Therefore, the project called “Il Granello di Senape” was born, an after-school program for elementary and middle school children. The name given to the project turned out to be truly prophetic, because the initial few children have become the current 100 and the volunteers have also become a large group.

Our Goals

"First objective"

The first goal of our service is to support the social services of the S. Donato and S. Vitale neighborhoods in school aid, which refer us to children with greater difficulties to be included in our recovery project, periodically checking the results together. We develop a relationship of great collaboration with the schools that allows us to adapt the program to the needs of the child in agreement with the teachers. The results are really very satisfying, the school recovery is above expectations.

"Second objective"

The second objective, no less important, is to create a welcoming environment for children and young people, in which, in addition to studying, friendships can develop. Thanks to a multi-ethnic and multicultural approach, the moments of play and the aggregative and workshop activities introduce comparison and relationships between peers in an atmosphere of harmony and serenity.

"Style"

Our "style" is the "Vincentian charism", which places the "person" and all of his needs at the center. Having the opportunity to approach many children and their families (all in situations of serious discomfort) we try to be of help in the difficult educational task and to be supportive in lots of their needs: job search, contacts with the public administration and with the Educational Services of the San Donato - San Vitale district, interviews with teachers, advice in the medical field…. Over time we have thus become an important point of reference for the families of the area

In a nutshell, the effectiveness of our action translates into one word: Autonomy.

Our action is focused on people who find themselves in "momentary", "contingent" difficulty, but who want to improve their condition and that of their children. With the right support and help (scholastic, educational, psychological, linguistic, emotional ....), these people can overcome the moment of crisis, to become fully "autonomous" and integrated in the territory they belong to.
The paths are individual and, therefore, more or less long, but with the help of the most experienced volunteers and networking with the schools and the various institutions in the neighborhood, the people who come to us gradually increase their skills, to get to walk alone.

In a nutshell, the effectiveness of our action translates into one word: Autonomy.
